Why the Radio Silence?

Well, I’ve been a little busy with the business, other creative interests, family life, and all that goes with it. :)

A couple of weeks ago, it was my eldest son’s 8th birthday, so we celebrated at home on the actual day with some presents and a cake after dinner out at a restaurant of his choice. It happened to fall on a crazy-busy day for me, and I didn’t have time to bake him a cake myself, so I did a bit of nifty decorating with a store-bought cake:

Crackers Art - 8th birthday cake

Believe me when I say this literally took me five minutes to decorate! I bought a simple sponge cake that already had jam and cream through the centre and was dusted with icing sugar across the top in lieu of icing. I simply iced the edges with some Betty Crocker pre-made icing and stuck on the little chocolate sticks (Arnott’s TV Snacks), and popped a few crispy M&Ms around the edges. It was very well received!

See another super-easy quickie cake I threw together here in this post.

We then went on to enjoy a spectacular science-themed birthday party, which I will be sharing with you all soon! Here’s a sneak peek of the buffet table:

I’ve also been busy organising an upcoming party for my hubby’s 40th birthday (which was actually back in March. But, you know…better late than never!). We are having a fun retro ‘Cocktails & Karaoke’ theme. Here are the invitations that went out a couple of weeks ago:

I have also been working on the next printable range to be released in my Etsy store, which will be the Science party theme with a version for both boys and girls. It worked perfectly for my son’s party, and I can’t wait to share it with you all!

Plenty more photos to share soon. Stay tuned!

Science Party Planning

It’s been exactly two weeks since I last posted, and in that time I have been BUSY. I’m currently planning my eight-year-old’s science party (which is happening this weekend), as well as a 40th birthday party for my hubby next month. I’m rather looking forward to taking a break from parties after that to concentrate on creating some girls’ printable ranges!

Here’s the invitation that went out to my son’s friends, as well as some cute lolly bags he handed out to his classmates on his birthday last week. Now I’d better keep going on that party prep!

Harvey’s Arcade 6th Birthday Party

Crackers Art Arcade Birthday Party

We recently celebrated my son Harvey’s 6th birthday party, and I’m very happy to be able to share some photos of Harvey’s Arcade!

Harvey absolutely loves Pac-Man after Santa brought him an old-school games console for Christmas which you plug into the TV. And when we saw Wreck-it Ralph at the movies, he was delighted to see Pac-Man amongst the characters and became fascinated with the idea of amusement arcades and arcade games. We visited a local (modern) games arcade, and Harvey couldn’t believe some of the machines spat out tickets that he could then redeem for a prize. Bonus! So when I suggested we could create his own games arcade for his birthday in the middle of our lounge room, he just about fell over! :)

I started out by designing this invitation, which set the tone for a bit of retro gaming fun…

And then I set about creating the buffet table in the same retro flavour…

I made these Sonic’s Golden Rings cookies myself. Very simple (and delicious) – I’ll be creating an easy tutorial blog post to show you how!

I made these cake pop joysticks myself! My first attempt at cake pops, and I was very happy with how they turned out (thanks for the tips everyone gave me on my Facebook page!)

I’ll be creating a blog post tutorial about these super-easy Pac-Man mini pancakes too! Yummo!

These Mario’s Mushroom Muffins were very easy to make. I used store-bought mini muffins and dipped them in melted white chocolate (which I had already coloured red for the cake pop joysticks). Then I just dabbed some melted white chocolate dots on them. Viola!

Once again I enlisted the help of the very talented Lisa from Cakes & Biscuits by Lisa to create Harvey’s birthday cake. And once again, Lisa was able to take my flat illustrations and turn them into a three-dimensional masterpiece! Needless to say, Harvey’s face lit up like an arcade game when he saw it!

I designed this name plate to go across the front of the cake which Lisa had made up for me in edible printed icing. In the end, the colours of the edible icing were a little muted for my in-your-face-colour tastes, so I simply printed the nameplate on my inkjet printer to the same size and stuck it on over the top! We obviously didn’t eat that part, but the same sort of thing can definitely be achieved with printed icing that you can eat. :)

For party favours, we gave away cookies in favour bags, Donkey Kong lucky dips (which were plastic barrels with stationery items inside), and toy Wii controllers which were like Pez dispensers.

And here’s the cute little manager of Harvey’s Arcade! Harvey specifically requested he be the manager instead of the owner. He wanted to manage all the games and make sure everyone was having a good time.

The games room!

I whipped these cushions up the day before the party to throw on the couch in the games room. I simply bought two cushions from Ikea, cut out the felt shapes, and glued them on with craft glue. No sewing required! (which is good since I can’t sew very well…)

This was by far the most popular item in the arcade. The kids queued across the lounge room to have their turn on this thing, and the perseverance in trying to get a chocolate bar was very amusing! In the end (and after multiple attempts), a lucky few managed to do it! Persistence pays off!

We played team ball games in the back yard so the kids could earn tickets to redeem at the prize counter. There are always some kids who are reluctant to play party games, so this enticed them to participate because everyone who did automatically earned tickets. Then the winning team earned bonus tickets so they had more to redeem at the prize counter.

Harvey with his amazing birthday cake. Thanks Lisa! :)

So, there we have it! Harvey’s Arcade. I think this was our most successful kids party to date in terms of the fun factor on the day. The kids absolutely loved the arcade and all played so well together. Sometimes the noise level hit fever pitch as they all played the games together and egged each other on…just like in a real arcade. :)

As always, the party printables will be available soon in my Etsy shop!

Pac-Man Cake: Cakes & Biscuits By Lisa

Well, Easter is almost upon us…

…and I, for one, am really looking forward to the school holidays. I know – have I taken leave of my senses? But, no – I’m actually looking forward to some fun chill-out time with my two boys. Now that a whole term has gone by with the two of them both at school, I’m still not quite used to the quiet house every day. Don’t get me wrong: I relish the time to myself and put it to very good use. But I miss the little guys while they’re not here, and we all enjoy how relaxed the school holidays are with a complete lack of routine. Pyjama days, sleep-ins, movies, cafes, the beach…lovely stuff.

So I sent them off today with their little Easter goodies for their school friends and teachers, and posted off some goodies yesterday to the boys’ grandparents and cousins, including these little goodie bags for my nephews (one of them has food allergies and can’t eat chocolate).

I couldn’t resist making some for my boys too. I’ve also promised them some fun Easter craft activities on Sunday, so it’s time to raid my craft stash and put some little activity boxes together.

Hope you all have a safe and happy Easter surrounded by those you love (and yes, I do include chocolate in that category). I’ll see you on the other side with a whopping big blog post about my 6-year-old’s Arcade birthday party!

A quickie 40th table

Crackers Art 40th table

It’s amazing what you can do in 30 minutes! While my hubby took my kids to swimming lessons, I quickly threw this table together for his 40th birthday today. He’s having a party in a few weeks, but I thought he needed a little fuss made today too. :D Now we’re all set up for cake and ice-cream when we come home from dinner tonight.

All of these items were in my party stash – you might recognise some of this stuff from my Lego, Wonka, Christmas and Easter tables!

Vintage Racing Party

Crackers Art Vintage Racing Party

In August last year, I had the pleasure of creating some custom printables for a client to suit a vintage car racing theme. While my customer only needed a few items, I knew the theme would look fabulous across a complete printables range, so I set about creating one.

Both of my boys have already chosen their birthday party themes for this year, so I created this concept party table for the fun of it to show the printables in action.

Hope you like it!
